- Description: A month of missing the last train on purpose, and the city that appears after midnight.

London at one in the morning is a different city. The crowds have gone home, the shops are dark, and the streets belong to night buses, cleaners, bakers, nurses and people who have missed their last train. For a month, I missed mine on purpose.

Wet streets double every light in the city.

## The last train

The last trains leave the big stations a little after midnight. There is a particular mood on them: tired, friendly, slightly unreal. People talk to strangers. Someone always falls asleep and misses their stop. On the last train to Brighton one Friday, a man in a suit played the harmonica very quietly for the whole journey, and nobody asked him to stop.

After the last train, the city changes gear. The night buses take over, lit up like aquariums, carrying people between the late shift and the early one.

## Rain and neon

It rained on most of the nights I walked, which turned out to be a gift. Rain turns every road into a mirror. A single red sign becomes two. The green cross of a pharmacy spreads across a whole wet pavement. Photographers know this well: the best night pictures of any city are taken after rain.

I began to plan my walks around the weather forecast, hoping for showers. I bought a proper umbrella for the first time in my life.

## The people who keep it running

At two in the morning I met a baker in Bethnal Green who had started work at eleven. At three, a cleaner in the City who listened to Portuguese radio while she polished marble floors. At four, a group of nurses finishing a shift, eating chips on a bench outside the hospital, laughing about something I did not catch.

The night city is not empty. It is full of people doing the work that makes the day city possible. We rarely see them, because we are asleep.

## A café that never closes

There is a café near Smithfield meat market that opens at four in the morning for the market workers. When I went in, it was full of men in white coats eating full breakfasts, a few clubbers in glitter, two police officers and one very quiet poet writing in a notebook.

The café at 4am, the City from a bridge, and a side street that looks like somewhere else entirely.

## Listening to the night

The night city has its own sound, and after a few weeks I could hear its hours. Midnight is voices: people spilling out of pubs, taxis, phones. At two, the voices thin out and you hear the machines — street sweepers, delivery lorries reversing, the hum of a shop fridge through a closed door. Around four there is a real hush, the deepest of the night, when you can hear your own footsteps echo in a street of offices. And then, before five, the birds start, even in the middle of the city, and the first buses of the day pull out of the garages with their lights on and nobody on board.

I started recording short clips on my phone, one minute at each hour. Played back together, they sound like a piece of music with four movements. I listen to them sometimes during the day, when the city is loud, to remember that it is also capable of being quiet.

💡

Walking at night: tell someone your route, stay on main streets and lit squares, and take the night bus home. The night city is kind, but it is still a city.

## Why walk at night?

Partly for the quiet. Partly for the light. But mostly because the night shows you the shape of a place without its costume. The buildings are the same, but you see them differently when nobody is performing in front of them.

#### Is it safe?

Mostly, if you use common sense: busy routes, lit streets and a charged phone. Many areas are busier at night than you would expect.

By the end of the month I was very tired and slightly in love with a city I thought I knew. Now, when I am on the last train home, I sometimes stay on for one more stop.
